I downloaded and read the M1/910's manual from the Ispan website, and if they have indeed posted the right manual for the M1/910, it looks to me like the V1/810 is a very different camera from the M1/910, and the M1/910 is basically a 7000/720 with a V1/810 case and a 5Mp sensor.

This means the M1/910 is saddled with all the shortcomings of the 720, with none or few of the advances of the V1/810. This is curious, because it strongly suggests the V1/810 is an oddball in the Digilife line, as though it was put together by a different company or team of people. The S670 and 720 bore strong resemblances to each other, and these 'family' traits show up in the M1/910 manual. The V1/810, from screen icons to software to controls to menus, is different across the board. It's as different as the Aiptek DV4500 was from the DDV-720.

The V1/810 takes ASF's, not AVI's, for instance. Is the video editing software with the M1/910, Ulead's Video Studio, or Cyberlink's PowerDirector? If the V1/810 and M1/910 are very different cameras, whether the M1/910 has stereo MP3 output, would not be conclusive that the V1 should. I've heard that queenofglitter will have the M1/910 for sale around the end of this month.

Hmm, that's interesting. I just checked one of mine, and sure enough, the file properties say 15fps. Now, I know what 15fps video looks like, from my old Aiptek DV4500, and the V1's output is too smooth to be 15fps. So something's out of whack, and I'm sure the frame rate actually is higher than 15. But then, that video was shot indoors without extra lighting, so it might be slower. (ASF slows down the frame rate in reaction to lower light levels.) So I checked 4 video clips, one outdoors and one indoors, ASF's from the V1, and one outdoors and one indoors, AVI's from the DDV-720. Even though there is no significant difference in blurring or jerkiness from panning, both AVI's from the 720 claim 30fps, and both ASF's from the V1 claim 15fps.

Whether they were indoors or outdoors made no difference, just whether they were ASF or AVI. I suspect something's up either with the information in the file header, or how the program 'rates' the fps from the video clips. And, the indoors ASF video from the V1, supposedly at 15fps, pans with less blurring than the supposedly 30fps equivalent AVI shot with the 720. If you have a chance, could you check out for me whether your V1 has stereo for the MP3? As you probably know by now, mine does not and we're trying to determine if I just have a defective one. I ran a check on the MP3. It was really easy to load a file in. To make sure my perceptions are correct I listened to the same file (U2-Vertigo) on my Dell Axim and the V1.

This song has lots of stereo seperation. My V1 is definitely MONO.

Re your review: very good and detailed. I didn't have anything clunking around or falling off my V1. I actually dropped it a good 5 feet on on a trail and no damage. Out of about 50 clips I've done so far, 2 have failed - the only thing they had in common was a lot of movement to the camera.

I did some A/B comparisons with jpeg motion files on various digicams. Compared to a 15fps jpeg motion on a Canon A300 the Digilife clip seems much smoother. A Canon SD400 at 30 fps had an edge on image quality, but it consumes memory a whopping 6X as fast as Digilife MPEG4 making it quite impractical.

Overall I am pretty happy with the V1, but it seems they could make it smaller, and any improvement in image quality would be good, but it's pretty impressive considering the relatively small file sizes. One thing it really needs is a bright LED on the back to tell you when it's recording. THe little flashing LED's and even the screen are no match for bright sunlight. Sgspirit, I may be misunderstanding but it seems you are implying that the ASF (Advanced Systems Format) file format automaticallyimplies variable frame rates and/or variable bit rates. The ASF file format is just a media container and does not automatically imply any specific capabilities. The only implied capabilityis that ASF was designed to be streamed, other than that, an ASF filecould containthe samelimited codecs as an AVI.
