Hello everyone, I have a big problem. I turned on my notebook yesterday and i had the following massage: 'windows/system32/config/system file is missing or corrupt.

WINXP PRO ON A NEW PC WHILE BOOTING UP DISPLAYED: WINDOWS COULD NOT START BECAUSE THE FOLLOWING FILE IS MISSING OR CORRUPT: WINDOWS SYSTEM32 CONFIG S YSTEM I understand from article 'Config.sys is missing or corrupted' that means the System Registry Hive has become corrupted. Artcle advised that there are two ways to get back up and running. The easy way which doesn't always work, and then there is the hard way.

Easy Way - Noting that this doesn't always work. When you are booting your system, press the F8 key during the start of the bootup sequence, meaning after it does the Power On Self Test. Once you press the F8 key, you will be taken to a Menu. Select 'Boot Using Last Known Good Configuration'. It will now attempt to load Windows XP using a past set of configuration files. I am sorry to say in my case that did not work.

Since that did not work, there is the next step.the hard way. Hard Way Boot your system with the Windows XP Install CD, let the system boot into the Setup. Once in the Setup, choose to run the Recovery Console. I was supplied with a recovery CD.

I tried the 'hard way'. When prompted to press any key to boot from CD, a DOS type window appeared entitled Windows Setup. There did not appear to be a choice of running the Recovery Console. It then said: 'File setupdd.sys could not be loaded. The error code is 7 Setup cannot continue. Press any key to exit' As a result, I was not able to follow the balance of the article's directions. After exiting that screen, the system reboots and says, You can attempt to repair this file by starting Windows Setup using the original Setup CD-ROM.

Select 'r' at the first screen to start repair. I tried typing 'r' at each screen and in between without any effect. Any ideas about what is next? For what it is worth, I can install an additional drive in the computer.

I have an external hard drive that can be used. I also have an old PC running WIN2000PRO. Could I install WIN XP PRO on a new hard drive and then connect the old hard drive and transfer the valuable data, programs and settings to the new drive? Swapping out video cards did not change the problem.

Back to the original card. The file that cannot be loaded giving rise to the error 7 code has changed to 'File ntkrnlmp.exe could not be loaded.' Does this make a difference? With #1 chip in #2 slot and #2 chip in #1 slot it once again said 'DRAM timing is too tightly so reload timing. Controls.

Press any key or Del Key to continue.' It continued on its own though with no keys presed.

The two RAM chips have been tried in every combination possible in the #1 and # 2 slots. Should I try them in slots #3 AND #4? Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm so u are getting two errors, one is DRAM and other is Code 7 and i think both are related to BIOS, see here in the above forum site, that person said, u have to change the Memory Voltage in BIOS, and theis MSKB article is saying that ur BIOS has issu with ACPI is enabled!!!!! So can u RESET ur BIOS, just turn off the system and take out the battery for 15-20 minutes, and after that put it back and then turn on the system, now try to install XP and post back the results!!!!!!!

I do have 865PE Neo2 MSI board with Core Cell. I disabled Power Management/APM and changed dram frequency from auto to 400 and power voltage at 2.60v.

Power voltage was then changed to 2.65v. No new results. In BIOS Power Management Features changed ATPI to S1/POS, S3/STR and Auto. All resulted in the same response on booting from the CD -a DOS window that says TRAP 00000006 and EXCEPTION with a half page of abreviations with = alpha numeric code and hangs with along the bottom the statement 'Setup is loading files'. With different files different times. Then on booting with the XP Install CD, I was able to get into a DOS window which did not have error code 7; however, it said 'Setup is loading files (Windows Executive).' And then hangs.

And then hangs (I allowed 20-30 minutes). On retry received 'File setupdd.sys could not be loaded. The error code is 7.' And on retry ' i386 ntkrnlmp.exe could not be loaded.' And on retry also Windows Setup window again stating 'Setup is loading files (Windows Executive). I put a seconday hard drive from an older PC running WIN 2000 PRO (program not on that drive though) into the new PC which is being diagnosed with all other hard drives disconnected. With recovery CD in drive after first two DOS screens it says 'Invalid system disk - replace the disk and press any key' Without recovery CD in drive it searched for boot drive in floppy - not found; boot failure.

These were consistent on retries. I put the primary hard drive from the older PC ruming WIN 2000 PRO into the new PC which is being diagnosed with all other hard drives disconnected. Computer goes through initial DOS screens (1) which recognizes an IDE drive as the primary drive (2) reviews computer data and then computer hangs with blinking cursor in upper left hand corner of screen. The same thing happens with the recovery CD in the drive.

These were consistent on retries. I put the questionable primary hard drive from the new PC running WP XP PRO into the old PC with no other hard drives attached. The old PC on the first page of DOS was trying to detect IDE Primary Master - press F4 to skip.

Computer hangs. The results were the same with recovery CD in drive.

System32 Config System Missing

These were consistent on retries. Mobo or hard drive?

I don't know about a 'line of code missing' error but if it's 'missing or corrupted' here's some info: That assumes it's not booting into windows and you need to start with the xp cd. Then you copy files from the windows repair folder into the windows system32 config folder. If you only have a USB port for external drive support you really ought to get an external CD or DVD drive. Otherwise you'll need to create a bootable pendrive or whatever USB drive you use and copy to it those files from another xp computer. Then boot your junker with it and copy the files to their correct location. If by chance it is booting into windows try doing a system restore to an earlier date.
